Toy Chests

Death and brain damage have been caused by toy chest and other lids falling on children's heads or necks. Most of the victims were under 2 years of age, though children as old as 10 have been injured. Twelve million Cedar Chests made between 1912 and 1987 by the Lane Furniture Company have been recalled (888/856-8758). According to the CPSC, at least ten children have died when they became trapped in these chests and suffocated.

A recall or a corrective action had been issued for chests that latch automatically when the lid is closed; lid supports that fail, allowing the lid to fall onto a child's head or neck; and chests that lack a lid support device and do not have adequate ventilation.

IF YOU ALREADY OWN A TOY CHEST OR TRUNK CALL THE CPSC (800/638-CPSC) FOR INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO FIX IT.
