#FamilyVoicesFriday: Jared’s Story

On April 25, 1997, Jared was killed when the Evenflo Happy Camper portable crib he was in collapsed. Just 8 months old, Jared was a happy and spirited baby who wowed everyone he met with his beautiful blue eyes. The portable crib that killed Jared, which featured rotating center hinges on the top rails, should have been recalled much earlier. Jared was the 11th baby killed in this type of crib when he became trapped in the V-shape of the collapsed ... Read more

Consumer report and KID Best Friend Mitch Lipka dies

This week KID lost a best friend. Mitch Lipka died after a courageous fight against cancer. Mitch was an award winning consumer reporter. Soon after Danny died in a dangerous portable crib in 1998, Mitch began to investigate the children’s product safety system that would allow such a deadly product to not only stay in homes and child care facilities, but also enter the market in the first place. The result was series of articles in the Sun-Sentinel ... Read more

Danny, Inez and KID’s best friends

Sixteen years ago today, Linda Ginzel arrived at her son Danny’s child care home to find he had been rushed to the hospital.  She later learned he had been strangled by the collapsing top rails of the portable crib he napped in while at child care.  Danny’s parents were shocked to discover that the crib had been recalled 5 years earlier and that Danny was the fifth child to die in that brand.  They couldn’t believe that a child’s portable ... How to help: what to say after the loss of a child

KID was founded by parents who lost their sixteen month old son when he was strangled in the top rails of a dangerous portable crib.  Danny’s parents channeled their grief into social action that has contributed greatly to the safety of all children.  But that doesn’t lessen the grief.  Through the years, KID has worked with many other brave families whose children have died in unsafe products.  We are all sometimes at a loss of what to say ...
