How to help: what to say after the loss of a child

KID was founded by parents who lost their sixteen month old son when he was strangled in the top rails of a dangerous portable crib.  Danny’s parents channeled their grief into social action that has contributed greatly to the safety of all children.  But that doesn’t lessen the grief.  Through the years, KID has worked with many other brave families whose children have died in unsafe products.  We are all sometimes at a loss of what to say ... Happy Grandparent’s Day

Grandparent’s day is a day that should be dedicated to all the grandmas and grandpas in our lives. Grandparents are often our favorite caregivers, but it can be hard for any caregiver, including grandparents, to keep up with constantly evolving child product safety messages. This grandparent’s day, KID has provided the answers to the most common safety questions we get from grandmas and grandpas. If you have a question that isn't answered here, ... Read more

Words from a Champion: Guest Blog by Congresswoman Schakowsky

Congresswoman Schakowsky joined KID and others to mark the fifth anniversary of this landmark safety bill.  She offers these insights.   This month we mark the fifth anniversary of the signing of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), the most significant product safety reform since the creation of the Consumer Product Safety Commission in 1972. Recall announcements should provide vital information and goad consumers to take action.   But too ... Read more

Here are some highlights from my travels: Last month, in Springfield, Illinois, I met with over 30 grandparent caregiver advisers – these are people who work daily with grandparents who for a variety of reasons are parenting their grandchildren.  So much has changed since they raised their children, the advisers look to KID ... Bobby’s story: a warning about recalled Graco Strollers

Bobby's grandmother recently shared his story on our Family Voices website. Bobby Dean died in 2007 when he was trapped between the seat and food tray of a Graco stroller. Graco finally recalled this product in 2010, but did not mention Bobby's death, only reporting on four earlier deaths and other injuries between 2003 and 2005. Had the recall taken place earlier, Bobby's life might have been spared. Another death was reported on SaferProducts.gov ... Read more
