Take Action

Tainted Toys and Deadly Cribs

By now you may have heard about the millions of toys recently recalled because of lead paint contamination or hazardous magnets. Or the crib recalled after at least three deaths.

This wasn't an isolated case of a fly-by-night importer dumping tainted products on the US market. These toys were sold over a period of years by established American companies such as Simplicity, RC2 and Mattel. So are you angry that your child may have been exposed to lead paint by well known brands or that your child might suffer an injury from magnets or their crib?

These recalls highlight the problems with the US children's product safety system: too little testing, too much delay, and no rigorous enforcement of our safety laws. Kids In Danger, whose founders lost their son to this same ineffective product safety system, urges you to take action now.

1. If you have the products involved in these recalls or other recalls, take them away from your child and follow the instruction in the recall notices.

2. Write to your US Senators. Tell them that the train is leaving the station-it is up to them to be proactive on children's product safety. The Senate is consider CPSC Reform Act of 2007, the strongest consumer product protection legislation in decades. Congress should step up its oversight role and strengthen CPSC to be a stronger watchdog for our children.

3. If you don't live in Illinois, Michigan, Arkansas, Louisiana, Rhode Island, New Jersey or Vermont, there is no ban on reselling the recalled item or using it in licensed childcare facilities. Write your state legislators and urge them to support the Children's Product Safety Act to provide such a ban and add posting requirement to help spread the word on dangerous products.

4. Support KID's efforts to keep children safe.
