images (1)It’s been a great and busy week for the Safe for the Start program at KID. Here is the peak of the program’s education and outreach efforts just this week:

Tuesday

We headed out to Gage Park High School on the southwest side of Chicago to present our safety workshop to a group of teen moms. Lola, the group’s parent educator said “the presentation was very informative. I wished we had more time!” Other workshop participants continue to speak about the importance of the training for parents and caregivers. Check out some of their reviews.  If you know a group that could benefit from safety training, please contact us.

Wednesday

KID PD Laura Nikolovska attended a workshop about how to engage volunteers in at nonprofit organizations. Last year alone, volunteers donated 1500 hours of their time to help KID fulfill our mission to keep kids safe and many of these volunteers focused on the Safe from the Start program. Read more about volunteering for KID on our volunteer page and contact us if you would like to get involved!

 Thursday

We spent the afternoon in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood with the Illinois Newborn Roundtable, a relatively new coalition of professionals across Illinois dedicated to improving the lives of infants throughout the state. We shared with group our crib bumper pad exchange project (which takes dangerous bumper pads out of cribs and re- purposes them to use with the puppies and kittens at the city shelter) and talked about possible collaboration to hold another bumper pad drive in the future.

We will end the week by traveling to Madison, Wisconsin for the 2015 MIPA summit where KID ED Nancy Cowles will present with KID Board member Dr. Kyran Quinlan about emerging hazards in childhood injury and Laura will moderate a session on innovative research and advocacy in childhood injury prevention. Keep up with us on Facebook and Twitter.
